When was the castle built?
It was built in 1377 by the citizens of Brașov for the city's defense. In the early 20th century, the city donated it to Queen Marie of Romania, then it was nationalized during communism, and later returned to the descendants of the former owners, who operate it now. The castle is surprisingly homey, indeed looking like it did in Queen Marie's time, although the mysterious spiral staircases and nooks contribute to the atmosphere of horror films.

In July 2018, a tunnel built more than 80 years ago for Queen Marie was opened to the public. The queen, who suffered from arthritis, was transported by elevator through a well in the castle courtyard down to the bottom of the 30-meter well, from where she could reach the park through a 40-meter-long tunnel. Tourists can learn about the building's history through holograms in the tunnel. Only 6 people can enter the elevator at a time, so you must sign up in advance and pay an additional fee on top of the entry price.

What is the most spine-chilling thing in the castle?
23 rooms in the castle are open to the public, including the five rooms where the medieval torture instruments of Vlad Țepeș, the count Dracula well-known from horror films, are displayed (this can be viewed for an additional fee: 10 lei). He was infamous for his varied methods of torture, including impalement, blinding, boiling, burning – to name a few.

Where can I buy vampire fangs?
The vampire cult thrives at the foot of the castle – at the Dracula market, you can get anything related to the theme, even experience chills in an enchanted castle.

Where to eat if we're hungry?
Local producers have stalls at the market, so tourists can taste forest honey, cottage cheese wrapped in pine bark - and a very wide variety of cheeses or homemade sausages. If you wish to satisfy your hunger in a restaurant, you can confidently walk into any diner on the main street of the village. I recommend Pizza Quattro, we tried it and were not disappointed. And numerous places offer lángos or chimney cake.

What else is worth seeing?
In the park at the foot of the castle, there is a village museum that showcases the life of the locals. If you have time, also visit the castle in Râșnov, which is 11 km away from Bran Castle towards Brașov. If you've already seen the Râșnov castle, and if there are some dinosaur enthusiasts among your company, you can't miss the dinosaur park located right below the castle.
